school and education
With its structure of beams and columns and its roofed terrace, the restaurant of the Casernes school at Saint-Pierre, in the south of Reunion Island, provides a good example of 1960’s architecture. The project, which is centered around a rehabilitation of and an annex to the canteen, leans on this architecture, thus capitalizing on it. It relies especially on rediscovering the space of the much forgotten central patio; the facades are removed to provide volume and a more open and airy space. Thus, the central patio takes the function of a distribution point. The two extensions find their place as the counterpoints of the patio, creating a contemporary architectural identity. The extensions are designed carefully to each present an image appropriate to its function, sober and technical for the kitchen, colorful and playful for the canteen of the elementary school pupils.
