school and education
Lycée Bonaparte is an atypical institution, in more than one sense: it is located on the desert edge in the very constraining urban environment of Doha in Qatar, at close proximity to the high rise buildings; it actually hosts children from the kindergarten to those at high school, in a building with a very particular octagonal honeycomb floorplan. Originally conceived for 600 pupils, this French school had an astounding demand to accommodate more than 1400 children in its compound. The project envisages the refurbishment and the extension to the existing buildings, with an aim to accommodate 1900 pupils by 2018. The starting point was to recreate the consistency and the legibility of the building. The architectural project is designed around the old honeycomb building which represents the heart and the memory of the complex, and around which the extensions are conceived. The extensions, with the two floors height, provide for a contemporary architectural image. The part of the new buildings is on pilotis, to allow for the sight of the silhouette of the old building, while creating parking spaces and covered areas in the shadow where children spend their time during breaks. Special effort was invested to optimize the energy consumption of the buildings: solar protection, regulation of air conditioning, isolation... The extensions are made of a layer of porous screens – cobogos, made of precast matrix concrete which forms strong luminous filters. Constraints with regard to on-the-site work have oriented the project towards a phased construction schedule.
