REUNION - PARIS - MAURICE
Located on the perimeter of the urban zone of the city of Saint-Philippe, in the south of Reunion Island, facing the ocean, this swimming pool of the municipality was designed as a strong urban landmark, a transition point between the city and the sea. In this windswept southern wilderness, the integration of the building onto the site and the architectural layout intend mostly to minimize its impact. The dominant winds, which are the primary source of discomfort for the swimmers, are kept away by a building acting as shield, with a light roof over it as a welcoming feature for the public. The architecture is organized around two ‘L’ shaped volumes. The first one, that hosts the changing room, is in the form of the closed shell, nonetheless highly ventilated and lit up naturally. The small volumes and the aligned roofs provide the pace. The other arm of the ‘L’ unfolds under a long roof that groups the spaces dedicated to the ‘pieds chassés’. The pools and galleries, thus protected, nonetheless open up to the vast landscape and the ocean.
