REUNION - PARIS - MAURICE
Squatted for a long time now and half burned, this old tobacco drying facility, with its outbuildings used to be like a washed-up vessel. Located in the heart of Butor, the old fishermen quarter of Saint-Denis on Reunion Island, has been transformed into a theatre. Comprising workshops, offices, a fitted theatre, a resource center, meeting rooms and practice rooms, La Fabrik was transformed into a venue for artists for creation, production and residence. The architectural project was designed in such a way to turn the place into a forum for exchanges and encounters, open to artists as well as the inhabitants. The idea was to use the restructuring of the site as an engine for the big project of urbanization of the Butor quarters. The theatre isn’t the focal point, it is the link … As such, La Fabrik opens up amply on the quarters, participates in creating the strong links between La Maison de quartier, the social housing units and the neighboring school campus. The heart of the project consists of two buildings, inextricably linked one from the other: the new building (extension) that hosts practice rooms and the restored historic building that hosts the spaces for socializing and administration units. This choice allows for broadcasting areas to have a contemporary mass which is ideally adapted to the scenic and economic constraints, and that blends perfectly with and capitalizes on the historical building; the center-piece of the site.
