The former “Villa du Général”, acquired by the Région Réunion, is located in probably the best known historical street of the island (rue de Paris in Saint Denis on La Reunion Island), since this is where some of the most beautiful Creole villas are situated. It goes without saying that the whole area, along with the buildings, is dubbed as historical monuments. The task was to restore this iconic “case créole” whilst keeping the layout and design, with a specific focus on the façade facing the street which is covered with shingles, the eight slopes roof with the evacuation of rainwater on the interior of the framework, the columns in the ground floor supporting the first floor balcony with its Art déco balustrade, as well as the pediment decorated with the double cornice frieze. Yet, the main architectural challenge was not in the restoration of the exterior facades, but in the interior space, through the transformation of this historical dwelling into office and exhibition spaces, without changing the layout. The feat was not to alter the interior volume. The compliance with standards and the addition of modern equipment were treated in a very particular manner. For example, AC units were adjusted so as to be integrated as contemporary furniture.
